Disaster Preparedness And Risk Reduction Building Safer And More Resilient Communities In Belize

(Funded by the Norwegian Government, the Norwegian Red Cross and the Disaster Office of the European Humanitarian Office, DiPECHO)

Jointly implemented by Belize and Norwegian Red Cross Societies and expanded to include school-based

interventions and more focus on strengthening strategic and operational Disaster Management capabilities within the Belize Red Cross.

Twelve (12) rural communities (5 in Cayo and 7 in Belize districts) and 14 rural schools (7 in Cayo and 7 in Belize Districts) directly benefitted. There were 9 main actions carried out, which included:

  1. Formation and equipping of Community Disaster Response Teams and trained in First Aid, disaster preparedness and response, and Public Health in Emergencies, in coordination with NEMO.

  1. Creation of community and family emergency plans and validating them through drill exercises.

  1. Identification and implementation of micro mitigation projects that reduce disaster risk.

  1. Formation of School Safety Committees composed of teachers, parents and students, trained in basic First Aid, psychosocial first aid, health education, and support in developing school safety plans.

  1. Training and equipping volunteers of the Belize Red Cross to become National Intervention Team (NIT) members, specialized NITs, and Psychosocial Support Team members.

  1. Providing training for Belize Red Cross and other Disaster Management institutions in the SPHERE guidelines, advocating for the adoption of standardized tools and sharing experiences and tools in community disaster risk reduction.
